Circus

We took the kids to the circus yesterday. I haven't been since I was a kid. It was actually quite enjoyable.

The kids liked it too. Well, the first half was very LOUD with lots of singing and pounding music and Lily didn't like it that much. But she loved the second half with the elephants and tigers and trapeze artists. Aaron's favorite was the motorcycle riders. They ended up with 7 guys on bikes riding around in a little sphere cage. I thought they were gonna die. One wrong move and they would've been in a steaming heap of bikes and people at the bottom of the sphere.

One has to wonder, however, how one gets into the business of being in a circus. Do they hold auditions? Do little kids think "I wanna be a clown/ringmaster/animal trainer in the circus one day? Perhaps the one who trains goats to ride ponies.

PS I can't tell you how much I am loving this fall (85 degree high) weather. Stay away cold!

Macro photography

I've always been interested in macro photos. It's seeing the world from another perspective. I have a macro lens and need to use it more! I'll try to post a macro photo at least once a month. Here is one I took today. I really liked the texture. Click for larger image.

6 Unspectacular Quirks

My cousin Jennifer tagged me with this. So I guess I will do it, if i can think of 6 weird things about myself.

1. I wiggle my leg when I'm talking if I'm embarrassed or unsure of what I'm saying.

2. I can't sleep if Mike is breathing on my bare skin. I have to move the sheet or a pillow or myself until I can't feel it anymore.

3. I love cold cereal. Some days I have it for lunch. I think if I didn't have to cook for other people that I would also have it for dinner.

4. However, I absolutely love it when someone cooks me dinner.

5. Apparently I sleep with my eyes partway open, but strangely I've never been able to observe that.

6. I am the most non-photogenic person I know. It takes a LOT of picture before there is one I actually look good in. And it's not just me thinking I look bad. I had a boy in college that I went to a dance with and he actually didn't give me the pictures because he thought I looked like I didn't want to be there. What he didn't realize is that is how I look in many of my pictures. For some reason candids of me usually look better than posed.

Now, here are the terms and conditions for those of you who are going to be "tagged" by me:
Link the person who tagged you
Mention the rules on your blog.
List 6 unspectacular quirks about you.
Tag 6 other bloggers by linking them.

I tag Emily, Devin, Christy, Jennifer, Lis, and Ellen

Belated birthday

Aaron's birthday was last Thursday. I've been a slacker! He got a remote control helicopter, and is really quite good at flying it. He got some walki-takis and has really liked playing with those. And an automatic baseball shooter. He got some $$ too, but we haven't been able to get to a toy store yet. Here's some pictures.

Fun things kids say, part 4

I was listening to NPR on the radio as I drove Aaron home from tennis.

"Who's that talking, mom?"
"That's Barrack Obama....And that's John McCain."
"Oh, that's when they say (deepens voice) 'He wants to do that. That's bad. You should vote for me.'"

Weekend

We've been watching 2 of Teri and Grants kids this weekend. They have all gotten along wonderfully (though video games and movies have been over-dosed on). I think Laurel has liked not being the youngest, and played with Lily a lot more than I had thought she would. Aaron loved the "4 day sleepover" and enjoyed having a built-in playmate.

But G&T, I don't know how you stand picky eaters! No worries, the kids were very good and ate what they were given (I even kept the whole weekend on kid friendly food--does Carter really not like mac and cheese?). I had never realized how lucky I am to have kids who eat almost everything. And I am now way more sympathetic to all of you who have to deal with picky eaters.

Despite the fact that they have all been very well behaved, I am ready to go back to only having 2 kids. :)

In the grocery store.

Teenage boy to several friends: Whose mother teaches their kid what Vagisil is?

Fun things kids say, part 3

We had linguine noodles with dinner last night. Like most kids, Lily likes to suck the noodles in one at a time.

"Mmm!" she declared after she slurped in a noodle. "That's a sucky noodle!"

What? Me, interested in politics?

I've been following these campaigns more than I ever have. I have actually read and listened to speeches given at the conventions. Amazing. I've never really done that before.

Though I've been putting it off, I just have to mention Sarah Palin. Does anyone else think it's hypocritical for the McCain camp to attack Obama for his lack of experience and then picks someone who has less experience than Obama?

Also, why would you choose someone who seems to have a record of firing people for personal reasons and is under investigation for abuse of power? And one of these times was because she wanted some books taken out of the local library but the librarian refused?

And does anyone else find it....what's the word I'm looking for....ironic? Ridiculous? Sad? That Palin advocates abstinence only sex-ed, but her teenage daughter is pregnant?

To be fair, I searched for "scandals" surrounding Joe Biden, and all I could find was that over 20 years ago he once plagiarized part of a paper for school.

Pre-school

Lily loved the open house at her school. She had so much fun she cried when it was time to leave. She did okay the first day, but I kinda snuck out. The second day she knew I wasn't staying and cried, hugging my legs "I don't want you to leave!" despite the fact we had talked in the car about how fun school was and she was excited to go.

Finally I gave her one last hug and turned her over to the teachers. When I came back to pick her up she was fine and happy. The teacher told me it had taken about 20 minutes of crying/hugging until she warmed up. Then she had a great time. Hopefully the water-works will stop at drop off. It is just so different from Aaron. He never cried once.
