Fun things kids say

Lily ran up to me yesterday while we were outside. She was very excited. "Mom! Mom! I touch a bug! I touch a bug!"

"You did?" I ask?

"Yeah! It turned into a ball!"

Flash Photography

So my cousin Jennifer in the comments asked about flash photography. So this one's for you Jenny-4. ;)

The problem with a flash on a regular ol' point and shoot camera is that it is just right there in the corner at about the same level as your subject.

If you have an SLR you likely have a flash that flips up over the top of your camera. This is a bit better because it is higher.

In any case, I try to use as much natural light as possible by opening blinds and curtains. This way, even if it isn't enough light to take the picture, the effect of the flash is lessened by the available light.

If it is night, I turn on other lights in the room because then the light isn't so harsh and one directional. You'll also want to keep back as far from your subject as possible while still getting the shot you want. Also keep your subject several feet away from the wall to avoid dark shadows.

Just life

Nothing too exciting has been going on this week. Aaron is in a tennis class which got cancelled today because it was SNOWING. Then Lily fell asleep in the car on the way home which led her to be awake and annoying until 10:30. Now it's 11 and I don't want to go to bed because I feel like I haven't had any away from the kids time today.

Fruit Dip

I found this on allrecipes.com and chose it because I had the ingredients on hand. Who knew it would be so yummy!

1 C brown sugar
1/4 C butter (original recipe called for 1/2, but I thought it turned out great with less)
1 C sour cream (I used non-fat)
3 t vanilla

In small pan melt butter and sugar together till all the sugar is moist. In medium bowl mix together sour cream, sugar mixture, and vanilla. Can serve warm or chilled.

Children's Museum

Spring break was last week. We made it up to the Children's Museum on Thursday. The kids had a great time and I read several chapters of my book. :)

Expelled

I don't know if you have heard about the movie Expelled: No Intellegence Allowed, the creationist propaganda film starring Ben Stein (who I've lost all respect for). From what I've seen it's filled with lies and outrageous claims, such as Darwinism led to Nazism. Okaaay.

I know the 2 of you who read my blog are too smart to see this movie, but if you know of anyone even thinking about going to this sad excuse for a documentary, please refer them to Expelled Exposed

Why start a blog

So my friend Grant asked me why I decided to start up a blog. So besides the fact that it just seems to be the thing to do these days (guess I need to start a myspace page too), there are a couple reasons. One is to keep family members and friends, especially distant ones, updated with recent happenings. The other is that I used to keep a journal, but haven't for years. This seemed like a good format to start that up again.

So let's hear it, my one faithful reader, why do you blog?

Designing with Fresh Flowers

I took a course in floral design and wanted to post snapshots of the arrangements I remembered to take pictures of.

I am really trying to wish some spring weather upon us, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Why is it that as soon as it decided to get warm I come down with a cold so I can't even enjoy the nice weather? Blah. At least I have a neighbor nice enough to take Aaron to the zoo today. I'll have to take Lil sometime to make up for it.
